San Jose, Calif. - The Pacific women¹s water polo team fell to a pair of ranked teams Saturday at the LouStrong Memorial Tournament in San Jose. Pacific was topped by No. 7 and host San Jose State, 13-9 after falling to No. 1 Stanford, 14-3.
Gracie Smith tallied a pair of goals in each game for the Tigers, who are receiving votes in the CWPA Top 20 poll. Michelle Relton posted 11 saves while Karolina Hlavata scored her first three goals for Pacific against San Jose State. Relton added six more saves against Stanford.
Taylor Adair posted a pair of goals against the Spartans, while Anna Kertes chipped in a goal in each game.
Against San Jose State, Adair's 6-on-5 goal brought Pacific within 3-2 after one quarter, but the Spartans posted a 3-1 second quarter for a three-goal lead.
In the third, Kertes converted a penalty shot before Rae Lekness responded to give the Spartans a four-goal lead. The Tigers would get no closer as San Jose State answered goals by Adair and Brydie Pye in the fourth.
Relton made six saves against Stanford, while Smith posted two goals and Kertes scored her first for Pacific. Gabby Stone turned in 11 saves in goal for the Cardinal.
Pacific fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter, and the Cardinal stretched the lead to 6-1 by half. Smith tallied twice in the third quarter, but the Tigers would get no closer than 9-3 the rest of the way.
The Tigers open the season at 0-2, and will continue the LouStrong Memorial on Sunday.
The Tigers will face Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday at 12:40 p.m. before an exhibition with the Brazil national team at 3:20 p.m.
