Rally Comes Up Short As Pacific Falls To San Diego, 6-4

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Falling behind early on Sunday, April 27, the Pacific baseball team fell short in their comeback efforts as San Diego handed the Tigers a 6-4 loss at home at Klein Family Field to snap Pacific's seven-game winning streak. The loss for the Tigers dropped Pacific to 23-21 overall and 12-9 in conference play while the Toreros improved to 28-16 and 12-9 in WCC action.

After holding the top ranked Torero offense in check for the first two games of the weekend, Pacific was not as lucky in the finale of the three-game series as San Diego jumped on the Tigers early and never looked back. Scoring two runs in each of the first two innings, the Toreros put Pacific in a four-run hole, its largest deficit in its last 12 contests. They would add to the advantage in the top of the fifth run on a sacrifice fly that plated Connor Joe for the third time in the contest. Joe was a thorn in the Tigers side all day as the junior designated hitter reached base safely in all five of his trips to the plate including a solo home run in the second that started the two-run inning.

Down five, Pacific's offense was unable to get anything going early against San Diego's starter, P.J. Conlin (7-2), despite a huge chance in the bottom of the second when the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs only to come up empty. Pacific would not let the same chance go to waste four innings later as they finally were able to get to Conlin in their third trip to the plate. With the top of the lineup due up in the sixth, Pacific was able to once again load the bases with no outs in the inning to set up their scoring chance. With the pressure on, the Toreros went to the pen and brought in Seve Romo who finally cracked, losing all control. Without the benefit of another hit, the Tigers scored three runs as a walk, a passed ball, and a wild pitch brought in all three runs for Pacific in the inning, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Back in the game, the Tigers would strike for an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth as a tailor-made double play was botched by the Toreros, eventually allowing Pacific to score with a sacrifice fly. The run, however, would be the Tigers' last, as Pacific was unable to muster a rally in the ninth against closer Josh Goossen-Brown (4) after San Diego scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it a two-run game once again.

On the mound, Conlin earned the lone win of the weekend for the Toreros after pitching 5.1 innings while giving up four hits and three runs, two of which were earned. In relief, Goossen-Brown picked up the save with 2.0 innings of work as he gave up a pair of hits and one run, but kept Pacific off the board in the ninth to secure the win. For Pacific, freshman Will Lydon (2-4) lasted just two innings as he was run from the game after giving up four runs on six hits. The Tigers used five pitchers in relief with Kyle Crawford delivering a solid 4.1 innings of scoreless work midway through the game to keep Pacific in the game.

Offensively, junior Tyler Sullivan got back on track with a 3-for-5 day and a run scored, however, it was not enough as his counterpart, Joe, went 3-for-3 with three runs scores and one RBI.

The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday, April 29 when they host Stanford at 6:00 pm. The game is the last of Pacific's eight-game homestand and its only contest of the week as the Tigers have a bye-week in WCC play.
