Meth Takes The Early Lead At The WCC Championships

Bremerton, Wash. - Playing in their first WCC Championship tournament, the Pacific golf team put itself in contention for its first league title in its new conference after finishing day one in second place at -2 on Monday, April 14. The Tigers finished one stroke back of No. 35 ranked BYU which took the top spot on the leaderboard after the opening 18-holes by posting a -3, 285 .

With a chance to put his name among the best players in program history in his third conference championship tournament, junior Byron Meth hit the ground running and never looked back on Monday afternoon. Playing a flawless round of golf, Meth took apart the Gold Mountain Golf Club as the third-year standout fired off a -6, 66 to take the early lead at the three-day championship event. With six birdies in the round including scoring on two of the course's three par-5's, Meth recorded his second-best single round score, narrowly missing his epic round of 64 scored in the third round of the Pacific Invitational during his sophomore season. At six-under, Meth will take a two-stroke lead into the second round of play as he looks to become the third-straight Tiger to capture a conference individual title.

Behind Meth, the Tigers put two more golfers in the tournament's top-25 as junior Drew Bender and sophomore SeungJae Maeng each completed their first round of action at the WCC Championships at +1, 73. Playing two completely different styles, Bender completed his day with four bogies and three birdies while Maeng was all over the board including an eagle on the par-5, 6th and a pair of double bogies on the 1st and 9th holes.

Meth and the rest of the Tigers will tee-off round two of the tournament among the late group as Pacific will head out onto the course beginning at 9:40 am.
