Tigers Fall To Top-Ranked North Carolina

Box Score

Chapel Hill, N.C. - In a Sunday afternoon contest against the No. 1 team in the nation, the Pacific Field Hockey team was unable to dig out of an early hole, dropping a 7-0 decision to the North Carolina Tarheels at Francis E Henry Stadium. UNC used a flurry of goals in the opening minutes of half to sink the Tigers, who fall to 5-12 with the loss. The Tarheels improve to 15-2 with their seventh straight victory.

The scoring opened at the 1:29 mark, as Tarheel Emma Bozek took an entry pass from Emily Wold and converted with a mid-cage shot to give the hosts the early 1-0 lead. UNC padded the lead in the fourth minute, as Nina Notman scored off the first penalty corner of the contest to make it 2-0 North Carolina. Bozek added another off the next penalty corner, putting UNC up 3-0 just six minutes into the contest.

In the 12th minute, a Samantha Travers penalty corner shot was handled by freshman Emma Leach, who recorded her team-leading fourth defensive save of the season. The diverted Travers attempt found Loren Shealy, who was waiting on the left side of the cage, able to send a shot in past Pujade for a 4-0 Tarheels lead.

Bozek added her third goal in the 31st minute, as she shot from the top of the circle into the right corner of the cage, besting new Tigers goalkeeper Molly Macierz to put North Carolina up 5-0. For Pacific, Ali Campos had a scoring opportunity just before the halftime break, but her shot was blocked by a Tarheel defender.

The Tarheels would add a second half goal by Sam Night in the 45th minute and also scored in the 48th minute off a Travers penalty corner shot to complete the 7-0 scoreline.

For the Orange and Black, Campos fired three shots, including one on goal while freshman Bryanna Flanagan recorded a first half shot. Macierz saw the final 56:45 in the cage, making eight saves in her second action of the season. The Tigers had perhaps their best scoring chance of the second half in the 66th minute, but Campos had her shot corralled by goalkeeper Sassi Ammer to preserve the shutout.

The Tigers will now return to Stockton, facing off against California (7-8) at home on Saturday, November 1 at 12:00 pm for Senior Day and the regular season finale before hosting the NorPac Championships from November 6-8.
