Los Angeles - The No. 7 Pacific men's water polo team rallied from down four, but No. 5 Long Beach State scored twice late for an 11-9 win over the Tigers in the SoCal consolation semis.
Pacific will play for seventh later this afternoon at 1:40 p.m. against No. 6 UC Santa Barbara.
The Tigers fell behind 4-0 in the first 10 minutes, and trailed 6-2 in the third before storming back to tie the game at 9-9 with a 7-3 stretch over nine minutes of play.
Devon Thumwood posted a hat-trick while Ben Stevenson and Casey Fleming each scored twice. Sean Grady and Krisztian Laczkovics also tallied for Pacific.
Neither team put one into the back of the cage in the first five minutes of action until Long Beach broke through on a 6-on-5 goal from Ricardo Guimares at the 2:25 mark. The 49ers stretched the lead to 2-0 before the end of the first on a goal from Joey Fabian. Pacific failed to convert a pair of 6-on-5 opportunities and went into the second quarter down two goals.
Two minutes into the quarter, Dimitrios Lappas scored for Long Beach State, and Nick Rascon stretched the lead to 4-0 at the 5:23 mark.
But on the ensuing Tigers possession, Stevenson put Pacific on the board with a goal, and Casey Fleming cut the Long Beach lead to 4-2 with 1:31 before halftime. But Ricardo Guimares converted a 6-on-5 for Long Beach State as the Tigers trailed 5-2 at the break.
Rascon opened the third quarter with a goal as the 49ers led 6-2 but Fleming answered for Pacific at the 7:09 mark. Zacchary Kappos stretched Long Beat State's lead to 7-3 with 6:42 to go in the third.
Krisztian Laczkovics brought the Tigers to within three with his first of the game at the 5:37 mark. Stevenson tallied his second to bring Pacific back within a pair of goals at 7-5. But Dan Matulis scored for an 8-5 Long Beach State lead.
Devon Thumwood finished a five-meter penalty shot to cut the margin to 8-6 with 4:14 to go in the third. But Matulis answered again for the 49ers. Thumwood answered right back cutting the gap to 9-7 before the nine-qoal quarter came to an end.
Thumwood's third goal of the game in the fourth pulled Pacific within just one at 9-8, and at the 3:45 mark, Sean Grady brought Pacific all the way back, knotting the game at 9-9.
However, Lappas scored on the 49ers next possession and the 49ers defense held Pacific off the board. Devin Mefford put Long Beach State back up two at 11-9 with 1:05 to go.
Time ran out on the Tigers, as Pacific falls to 11-6 on the year.
Pavo Ljepopio recorded 10 saves in goal for Long Beach State while Brady Moore tallied 14 for Pacific.
