Trio Of Tigers In Contention After Day One Of The Big West Championships

San Jacinto, Calif. - After day one of the 2013 Big West Championships, the Tigers have three golfers in contention in the individual race at the Country Club at Soboba Springs. Playing against the conference's best on Sunday, April 28, Pacific saw senior Alex Edfort and sophomores Eric Sugimoto and Drew Bender put themselves inside the top-10 after the opening 18 holes of action. As a team, Pacific sits six strokes off team pace set by Hawai'i, which finished the day +4 with a team score of 292.

Taking on the new championship course for the Big West, the Tigers trio at the top got off to a rough start as Edfort, Sugimoto, and Bender combined for eight bogies in the first nine holes of action. However, despite the sluggish beginning to their tournament, the Tigers found their groove late to cruise into the clubhouse over the final nine holes of play. Despite three different types of rounds, Edfort, Sugimoto, and Bender each carded the same score as the trio posted +2, 74s to finish in a tie for 12th place overall. The trio will attempt to chase down Cal State Fullerton's Corey Gard and Hawai'i's Nainoa Calip who set the pace for the tourament with first day -3, 69s.

The teams hit the course for the second day of action at 7:15 am on Monday, April 29. The Tigers will tee-off beginning at 8:35 am alongside of UC Davis and UC Riverside for the second 18 holes of competition.
