Baseball Topped By UC Riverside 6-4

Box Score

Riverside, Calif. - Freshman RF Brett Sullivan picked up two hits and drove in two with a double, but the Pacific baseball team saw UC Riverside rally late for a 6-4 win Sunday at UCR Sports Complex.

Senior SS Dustin Torchio doubled and scored a pair of runs while junior C Jason Taasaas and senior 2B Tyger Pederson each added a hit and an RBI for Pacific.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first as Torchio doubled to the gap in left center and came in to score on a single up the middle by Taasaas.

Riverside answered with a bases-loaded sac fly from 1B Phil Holinsworth in the Highlanders first.

Pacific LHP Kyle Crawford retired 11 in a row until the fifth, when 3B Cody Hough hit a solo home run for a 2-1 Riverside lead.

The Tigers scored two in the top of the sixth, as Torchio was hit by pitch, sophomore 1B Erik Lockwood singled and freshman LF Gio Brusa was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sullivan delivered a double down the right field line to plate two runs and give Pacific a 3-2 lead.

In the Riverside sixth, the Highlanders' DH Kevin Davidson singled off Crawford, and RHP Jake Jenkins surrendered a single to Hough and a sacrifice fly by SS Alex Rubanowitz to tie the game at 3-3. Jenkins struck out 2B Nick Vilter to end the inning and leave a man stranded.

Crawford finished with three earned allowed on six hits in 5.1 innings, taking a no decision.

The Highlanders pushed the go-ahead run across in the seventh, when CF Joe Chavez walked, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. C Clayton Prestridge lined out to right, but it was deep enough for a sacrifice fly and a 4-3 lead.

RHP Trevor Frank put Pacific down in order in the top of the eighth, and UCR added a pair of runs in their half of the inning. Holinsworth was hit by pitch and DH Kyle Boudreau walked before Rubanowitz singled through the drawn-in infield for a 6-4 lead.

The Tigers picked up a run in the ninth as Brusa walked and Sullivan singled to center. Brusa took third on a fly out to right and came in to score on Pederson's sac fly to left field. But Frank recorded the strikeout to end the ballgame and complete the Riverside sweep.

UC Riverside LHP Kevin Sprague earned the win, tossing 1.2 innings in relief of LHP Mark Garcia. Jenkins (0-3) took the loss, allowing one run in his 1.2 innings of action.

The Highlanders improve to 17-14 overall, 6-3 in the Big West while the Tigers fall to 9-21 on the season, 2-7 in Big West play.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Stanford to open a four-game homestead.
