Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. - With the start of the 2013 season underway, the Pacific golf team put itself in prime position to take home the championship at The Farms Collegiate Invitational after a strong 36-hole performance on Monday, Feb. 11. For the day the Tigers shot five-over par as Pacific posted a two-round total of 581 to enter the clubhouse in second place.
With 18 holes to play on Tuesday, the Tigers will be chasing Saint Mary's as the Gaels finished the opening day at +2. The championship looks to be a two-team race as the Tigers and Gaels have seperated themselves from the pack with Pacific holding a 14-stroke advantage over the third place Missouri Tigers.
Individually, the Tigers are in the mix to take home multiple medals as both senior Alex Edfort and sophomore Eric Sugimoto are within striking distance of the top of the leaderboard. Edfort finished his first day of play in second place overall as the fourth-year golfer went one-under for the day, two-shots back of Fresno State's Jack Mulroy. Edfort was one of just three golfers to finish the first 36-holes under par as he and Saint Mary's Jonathan De Los Reyes each carded 143s to go along with Mulroy's 141. For Edfort, the day started hot as he posted a -3, 69 in round one, but as the sun began to set, the Somerset, N.J. natives game cooled as he shot a 74 in the second round.
Just behind Edfort, Sugimoto finished his first day of play at even-par as the sophomore shot a 71 and 73 in his two rounds of action. Sugimoto's 144 on the day placed him in fourth place overall and tied with two other golfers on the leaderboard.
Edfort, Sugimoto and the rest of the Tigers will look to make a play for the Invitational titles on Tuesday, Feb. 12 when the final 18-holes of action are played from The Farms Golf Course. The Tigers, paired with Saint Mary's and Missouri, will tee off their final round of action at 9:12 am from the first tee. To follow the Tigers throughout the day go to: GolfGameBook.com.
