Stockton, Calif. - After one of its most successful non-conference seasons to date, the Pacific women's basketball team turns the page as Big West play opens Saturday when the Tigers play host to UC Davis at 4 p.m. The 10-2 Pacific squad renews its' Northern California rivalry with the 5-6 Aggies.
"We're excited to open up Big West play at home," head coach Lynne Roberts said. As long as I've been here, it's always been a close game. It doesn't matter who's supposed to win, it always seems to come down to the last minute or two. We're expecting a no different on Saturday. They're extremely well-coached. They run their system very well. They're younger this year than they have been, but they are talented. They're still Davis. They still execute. We know it's going to be a challenge, but it's a fun way to open up Big West play."
"We're starting to figure out what we are good at. When we're able to pressure and get after it defensively, it opens up some easy offense for us in transition. I think our speed and athleticism comes into play. When we can do that, and use our depth to our advantage, that's what makes us good. We have to continue to do that, we've got some room for improvement in that area."
The Tigers closed out 2012 by lighting up the scoreboard for 102 points Monday against CSU Bakersfield in a 102-60 win. Pacific scored 100 points in a game for the first time since Feb. 20, 1991 (a 101-78 win over New Mexico State). The 102 points tied for the third-most in school history, and tied for the most against a Division I opponent.
Seven players scored in double figures, the first time Pacific has ever had seven players in double-digits. Kendall Rodriguez (16), Gena Johnson (14), Ashley Wakefield (13), Erica McKenzie (13), Kendall Kenyon (11), Hailie Eackles (10) and Shanice Butler (10) all reached double-digits in the scoring column. Ten different Tigers have hit double-figures in a game this season (Claire Conricode, Brianna Johnson and Sam Pettinger the others). The 10 points were a career-high for Eackles, who also grabbed a career-high six rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
The Tigers have won seven-straight home games dating back to last season, the seventh-longest home win streak in school history. The Tigers are 4-1 against those five, with the lone loss coming to then No. 1 Stanford.
