La Quinta, Calif. - Looking to get off to a hot start at the 2012 Big West Championships, the Pacific men's golf teams came out firing for the opening 18 holes of aciton to take the tournament lead on Sunday, April 29.  The Tigers carded the only red number of the day as Pacific shot six-under for the day to take a six stroke lead over UC Davis.

Individually, the Tigers saw a pair of golfers, junior Alex Edfort and freshman Byron Meth, stake their claim for the top of the individual standings with the elder Edfort entering the clubhouse with a one stroke lead over his younger counterpart.  For Edfort, the first day of action began ominously as the junior carded a bogey on the first hole of play before shaking off the mistake to post five birdies over the final 12 holes.  

Edfort's 68 in the first round of action at the PGA West Mountain Course set the pace for the rest of the field and was one better than a trio of players in the field including Meth, who all carded -3, 69s. Unlike Edfort, Meth got off to a quick start in his first Big West championship tournament, carding a pair of birdies in the first four holes and four on the frount nine before a pair of bogeys took the freshman just off of Edfort's pace.

Eith Edfort and Meth guiding the Tigers, Pacific will look to increase its lead at the top of the standings in day two action on Monday, April 30 when the teams hit the course for the second of three 18 hole days in La Quinta, Calif.  Teams will beginning teeing off for the day at 7:15 am.
