Pacific Baseball Looks For Season-Sweep at Nevada Tuesday

Box Score

Game Notes

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team will look to sweep the season series from Nevada on Tuesday, as the Tigers make a trip to Reno for a 6 p.m. contest against the Wolf Pack.

In the last meeting with the Wolf Pack, the Tigers came back from down 5-2 with four unanswered runs against Nevada on April 2. Pacific led 2-0 before a five-run Nevada fourth inning.

Redshirt freshman 1B Erik Lockwood ripped a two-run single to get two of the runs back in the bottom half of the fourth inning. After four scoreless frames, the Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth as junior 3B Dustin Torchio and Lockwood posted singles and junior DH Tyger Pederson was hit by pitch. Sophomore catcher Jason Taasaas slashed a ball past the diving first baseman and into right field to plate two runs and give Pacific the 6-5 walk-off win.

John Prato Matthews earned the win, with three innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits. He followed redshirt senior Joe Spizzirri out of the bullpen. Spizzirri didn't allow a hit to Nevada in 2.2 innings that night.

It's Spizzirri who will take the hill first for the Tigers on Tuesday at Peccole Park in Reno. The left-hander is 0-1 in 12 appearances, with a 4.07 ERA. In 24.1 innings, he's struck out 19.

It will be the first career start for Spizzirri, after 20 career appearances out of the bullpen for Pacific and Notre Dame.

Nevada enters at 21-18 overall and 5-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Wolf Pack dropped two of three over the weekend to Sacramento State. Nevada's starter has yet to be announced, with freshman LHP Barry Timko (2-0, 4.70 ERA in 15.1 innings) being the likely candidate.
