Seniors Shine In Season Ending Victory

Stockton, Calif. – After a great Senior Day Celebration where Sean Daley, Florian Gornik, Dylan Walker and Ryan Spencer were honored the Tigers played host to UC Santa Barbara in the Alex G. Spanos Center on April 14. The Tigers dropped the first two games, but fired back to push the match to five sets and win in thrilling fashion (20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 15-13). The win improved No. 13 Pacific to 8-19 (5-17 MPSF) and dropped UCSB to 7-19 (5-15 MPSF).

In his final game in the Orange and Black, Daley notched a season-high 17 kills to hit .533. Junior outside hitter Taylor Hughes added another 16 kills in just four sets. Junior setter Patrick Tunnell added 56 assists, while sophomore libero Javier Caceres tallied 15 digs.  

The Tigers and Gauchos traded points in the opening game leaving the score tied at six, but an 8-2 run by UCSB would catapult them to the set victory. Pacific fell 25-20 despite three kills by Spencer. Junior Christian Ahlin and Gornik each added a pair of kills in the set, while Walker collected a kill.

Pacific trailed most of the second set, but would rally to tie the score at 24 before a kill and a block from UCSB would end the game. Leading the Tigers in the set was Hughes with five kills on 12 swings. Daley and junior Matthew Houlihan added four and three kills, respectively, while Daley finished the game hitting .600. Tunnell added 14 assists in the second frame.

The Tigers controlled the third set en route to a 25-18 set victory led by Daley with five kills and three blocks. Hughes also added three kills in the set to hit .429, while Caceres tallied five digs. Putting a cap on the Pacific dominated set was Tunnell with back-to-back service aces to notch the final two points.

Pacific jumped out to a 12-6 lead in game four and would not look back taking the frame 25-23. Daley led the Tigers with four kills and three blocks, while Gornik tallied a trio of kills. Also collecting a pair of kills in the set was Hughes, Houlihan and Ahlin.

The final set was a tight struggle, but the Tigers prevailed 15-12 behind six kills from Hughes. The final point was notched by Gornik on a block solo to give Pacific the match victory. Gornik went on to say about the night and block, "This was definitely a special match since it was Senior Night." He added, "What a great way to end the season. It was something special to end my career with that block."
