San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Fighting both the weather and the No. 47 ranked Cal Poly Mustangs, the Pacific men's tennis team could not overcome the difficulties of the day as the Tigers fell, 4-1, on Saturday, March 31. The loss dropped the Tigers to 6-10 on the year and 1-1 in Big West play while the Mustangs improved to 11-5 on the year and 3-0 in the conference.
Facing impending rain, the two teams squared off in singles action to begin the day where the Mustangs took control of the match and with it the day. The Mustangs were able to jump ahead quickly against the Tigers as Cal Poly took the first three singles matches to finish play before Pacific was able to get on the board. Playing at No. 2 singles, freshman Ben Mirkin was able to take down Matt Fawcett, 6-4 6-4, to score the Tigers a point and give Pacific hope for a come back against the Mustangs. However, the win would be the only one of the day for the Tigers as Cal Poly took its fourth and final point needed to secure the match at No. 3 singles as junior Alex Golding dropped a tough three-set affair to Brian McPhee.
With rain beginning to fall and the match in hand, the remaining singles competition as well as the doubles match on the day were called off.
Pacific will be back in action on Sunday, April 1 when the Tigers travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to take on the UCSB Guachos in Big West action. The match is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
