Big Day Puts Pacific Into The Lead After Day One Of The 2012 Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau Pacific Invitational

Stockton, Calif. - In a day reminiscent of their opening round in 2010 when Pacific put together a championship run, the Tigers came up with the low round of the first day of play at the 2012 Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau Pacific Invitational. Opening their home tournament, the Tigers fired off a -14, 274 to finish in a tie for the lead in the clubhouse with Kansas State.

For Pacific, all five golfers finished under par in the first round of play from Brookside Country Club as the Tigers put three players into the top-10 on the day. Leading the way for the Tigers was their senior, Alex Edfort, who carded a 65, -7, to put his name at the top of the leaderboard. Edfort carded a course-best eight birdies throughout the round to post the third-best single-round score in Pacific history. Matching Edfort's score on the day were a pair of golfers as Charlotte's Joe Toland and Kansas State's Daniel Wood each posted a 65 in round one as the duo fired off seven birdies without a bogey on the day.

Just behind their senior leader, the Tigers saw their two sophomore's come up with big days on the course as Eric Sugimoto and Byron Meth each posted opening scores of -3, 69 to finished in a tie for ninth overall. Throughout the round, Sugimoto carded five birdies and just two bogies while Meth used an eagle on 18 to close out his day. Meth's eagle on 18 was one of three throughout the day on the par-5, 532 yard hole.

With their veterans pacing the group, the Tigers picked up strong efforts out of their two freshmen on the course as Austin Weatherholt and SeungJae Maeng each came into the clubhouse at one-under par. The -1, 71 for Weatherholt was the first round under par for the San Jose native. For Maeng, the young Tiger started off his first-ever round of collegiate golf in style as he posted a birdie on the opening hole which marked the first of his four throughout the round.

The Tigers will look to keep their hot start going on Tuesday, October 30, as Pacific hits the course for round two of the invitational. Pacific will tee-off at 8:50 am from the 10th tee as Maeng has the honor of getting the Tigers' started.
