Jan. 26, 2010
It is now late January and we are all getting geared up for the upcoming season. With the first game being less than a month away, we are working hard to prepare for the long grind of the college baseball season. With a long season coming soon and a long off-season wrapping up I was asked to take a look back at what we did to pass the down time when we are not actually working out for or playing baseball. So sit back and relax, you are about to get an inside look into the Pacific Baseball team off the field.
First, we all hang out together because a lot of us live very close. At what we all like to call the compound; myself, Matt Fuson, Mike Walker, Jamie Niley, Marcus Pointer, John Prato Matthews, Jake Hummel and Matt Carvutto all live next to each other. Also, Joe Oliveira, Nick Longmire, J.B. Brown and Ben Gorang all live in the same complex which is about a mile and a half away from the compound. Needless to say, we definitely like to kick it together doing all the things baseball players love to do. Whether it be the big game, cards, casual get together, or movie night we definitely enjoy hanging out.
I would also have to say that video games are a staple to our team. Not many nights pass without the local PS3 or Xbox and play some Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. As a team collectively, we have logged some serious hours playing online against other gamers, holding down the map against the zombies, or maybe playing a little 2-on-2 snipes. When we aren't wrecking havoc in COD, we also like to play Madden, Fight Night 4, or Mario Cart on Nintendo 64.
When the team is hanging out or video games are being played there has always been one constant, music. Our team definitely likes a wide variety of music. From rock, rap, hip hop, country and reggae, we definitely enjoy loud music on a consistent basis. Some of our favorite artists are Lil' Wayne, T-Pain, Slightly Stoopid, Tim McGraw and Blink 182, who is Oliveira's favorite (joke).
As much as we do like to sit around and relax we also stay active, looking to play any sort of game that involves some sort of athleticism. Football, basketball, Wiffle ball, indoor soccer, ping pong and even some pool football are some of the games we play around the compound. We definitely enjoy a little heated competition and sometimes the individual houses will battle each other for Street Supremacy.
The other item that takes up a majority of our time is the consumption of food. With eight big guys consistently being around each other, we like to cook hearty meals for all of us to partake in. From throwing in some DiGornio's pizza, making mac'n'cheese with hot dogs, cooking up some orange chicken and rice, or barbequing some steaks or tri tip; we like to eat, especially when it's good food. Pointer, Matthews and Fuson are good in the kitchen cooking and Mike Walker and myself like to handle the grill.
Well now that you know what we like to do with our down time, here are some big events that you can see us at. On Jan. 28, we will be hosting our third Annual Community Night which will features top MLB Agent and Pacific alum, Scott Boras, Oakland A's pitcher Dallas Braden and debuting as a San Diego Padre after three years as a Tiger baseball player, Kurt Wideman will all be in attendance. The next day, Jan. 29, the first day of official team practice starts and we as a team will be intra-squading against each other that Friday night. And on Feb. 19, the University of San Francisco Dons will be coming in for opening night at Klein Family Field.
Should be a fun next month leading into the best five months of college baseball...No Ceilings.
The Pacific baseball team begins its 2010 season at home against San Francisco for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, Feb. 19.
