Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's tennis team defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs, 6-1, at home Sunday behind a doubles point victory and five singles victories for the Tigers.
The win moves the Tigers to 9-5 on the season and 2-1 in Big West Conference play, while the Mustangs fall 6-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Pacific began the day by taking the doubles match point, 2-1. The duo of Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) and Renan Delsin (Santa Cruz da Conceicao, Brazil) upended Cal Poly's Andy Gerst and Alex Sonesson from the No. 1 position, 9-7.
The Tigers conquered singles action against the Mustangs winning five of the six matches played. Starke swiftly defeated Cal Poly's Andre Dome in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-2. Tiger freshmen Karl-Erik Paaro (Tallinn, Estonia) had a strong victory against the Mustangs' Rob Foy battling through three sets and a tie breaker, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8).
The only loss of the day came from a hard fought match in the No. 3 slot. Junior Renan Delsin (Santa Cruz da Conceicao, Brazil) pushed Andy Gerst to three sets winning the first, 1-6, dropping the second, 6-4, then finally Gerst took the match point in the third set, 7-5. The small victory was not enough to save the Mustangs as the Tigers conquered the overall match, 6-1.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday, April 4 when they travel to Irvine, CA to take on the UC Irvine Anteaters
