Santa Barbara, Calif. - In the final dual meet of the 2008-09 season, the Pacific men's and women's swim teams closed out conference dual meet action with a loss at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Feb. 7.
The loss dropped the men to a 1-7 overall record and 0-3 in the Big West Conference, as the women suffered their first conference loss of the year to finish with a 5-5 overall record and 2-1 in the conference. Santa Barbara, however, improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in men's conference action, while the Gaucho women finished the season at 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big West.
After Pacific's swimmers claimed first place in the 1000 Free to start out the afternoon, the Gauchos bounced back and took command of the points column after the second and third events to secure an early lead.
To start off the day, senior Matt Lundy (Lafayette, Colo.) and junior KC Albiston (Salt Lake City, Utah) led the way for Pacific's first and second individual event victories. The Tigers ultimately recorded four overall in the 28 events, but Lundy was the only male to perform the feat.
While Lundy won the race against Cal Poly the day before, he was primed to do so again this afternoon, taking first with a time of 9:32.60. For the women, Albiston touched the wall with a time of 10:25.79, a full second faster than her time on Saturday at Cal Poly. Immediately following Albiston, freshman Jayme Swalin (Kenmore, Wash.) touched in 10:28.30 to secure second place for Pacific.
Other notable finishes came in 200-yard events, as senior Jun Huang (Guangzhou, China) won the 200 Back for the second-consecutive day. Her time of 2:03.60 against UC Santa Barbara was an improvement on her 2:03.77 speed at Cal Poly on Friday.
Junior Melissa McGhee (Elk Grove, Calif.) capped off Pacific's fourth event victory when she turned in a 2:06.96 finish in the 200 Fly. That time was only fractions of a second off her season-best time in the event.
Now that dual meets are finished for the 2008-09 season, the Tigers will prepare for the 2009 Big West Championships, which begin on Feb. 25.
