San Luis Obispo, Calif. - In the final weekend of dual meets in the 2008-09 season, the Pacific women's swim team defeated Cal Poly 143-119, while the men fell just out of reach, 130-132 to the Mustangs on Friday, Feb. 6.
With the win, the women moved to a 5-4 overall record and 2-0 in Big West Conference dual meets, while the men dropped to a 1-6 overall record and 0-2 in conference. Cal Poly's men's team improved to 3-1 overall with the win, with a 2-1 conference mark, while the Mustang women fell to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in the Big West.
During the meet, five different racers recorded two individual event victories for Pacific, as four women and one male each finished first in their races twice.
In men's action, senior Matt Lundy (Lafayette, Colo.) kicked off his afternoon when he out-touched Cal Poly's Matt Waggoner in the 1000 Free with a time of 9:24.76. Lundy again topped Waggoner in the next distance freestyle event, the 500 Free, when his 4:38.64 barely edged out Waggoner's own 4:39.13.
The Tiger women, who claimed 10 of the 14 individual events in the dual meet, were led by seniors Jun Huang (Guangzhou, China), Jenny Lewis (Hesperia, Calif.), April Woo (Honolulu, Hawaii), junior Devonie Migues (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and freshman Elena Walterman (Framingham, Mass.) who each finished in first on two occasions.
Walterman's 2:05.58 finish in the 200 Fly secured the freshman her first individual victory of the season, and was the first of two on the day. She washed that down in the shorter, 100 Fly, with a 57.33 finish ahead of teammate sophomore Nikki Yamamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) who claimed second place in 59.09.
In relay action, both of Pacific's "A" squads in the 400 Medley Relay teamed up for a first-place finish. The men combined junior Dave Mathews (Dublin, Ireland), and seniors Dave Platow (Westport, Conn.), BJ Damazo (Paradise, Calif.) and Justin Canty (El Cajon, Calif.) for a 3:32.31 finish. The Tigers powered past Cal Poly's best team, who could only manage a finish of 3:34.78.
Huang, Woo, Walterman and Lewis each hold three event victories on the afternoon, when they started off the day with a 3:54.48 first-place finish ahead of Cal Poly's 4:00.99 speed.
The Tigers finish up their dual meet season continuing their Central Coast swing to UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m., before the 2009 Big West Championships, beginning Feb. 25.
