Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's tennis team swept the Loyola Marymount Lions, 6-1 at home on Feb. 20 at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.
Pacific climbed to a 3-3 record for the season while the LMU remains winless at 0-4.
The Tigers started the match by easily winning the doubles point. The first victory came from senior Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) and freshmen Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) in the No. 1 position who defeated LMU, 4-1, after the Lions' Borja Malet and Geza Bazula were forced to retire due to injury. Pacific went on to win the next two matches, easily capturing the doubles point 3-0.
Pacific dominated singles action Friday earning five strong victories. The Tigers earned the first singles point when Kuehne defeated LMU's Johan Berhof, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 5 position. Starke next defeated the Lions' Ivan Lopez in the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-1.
The win came for the Tigers when sophomore Artem Gramma (Krivoj Roj, Ukraine) breezed past the Lions' Aram Abgaryan, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 2 position.
Pacific freshman Karl-Erik Paaro (Tallinn, Estonia) won a hard-fought match against LMU's Geza Bazula. Parro lost the first set, 1-6, then came back strong to win the next two sets against Bazula, 6-2, 6-4. The Tigers only saw one loss at the end of the day, in the No. 3 position when junior Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) battled through a three-set match against LMU's Renzo Maggi. Veskimagi dropped the first set, 6-3, then overpowered Maggi to win the second set, 4-6, but Maggi defeated Veskimagi in the third set, 6-4
The Tigers will be back in action when they host BYU Friday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. at Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.
