Norman, Okla. - The Pacific men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Oklahoma on Monday, Feb. 16. The Tigers fell 2-3 in the 2009 season and the Sooners rose to 4-2 overall
The Tigers were off to a great start in the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion as senior Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) and freshman Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) easily defeated Oklahoma's Sergey Avdeyev and Ionut Beleleu in the No. 1 position, 8-3. Pacific also won the No. 3 position match where freshman Karl-Erik Paaro (Tallinn, Estonia) and junior Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) battled Oklahoma's David Pultr and Blake Boswell for a close victory of 8-6. These two matches gave the Tigers the doubles match point, this would be their only point of the day.
In singles action, the Tigers were swept by the Sooners. First, red-shirt sophomore Artem Gramma (Krivoj Roj, Ukraine) suffered a loss to Oklahoma's Sergey Avdeyev in the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-1. The Tigers continued to struggle as the next four match points were all captured by the Sooners in straight sets.
In the No. 6 position Pacific's freshman Ryan Kim (Elk Grove, Calif.) put up a fight against Oklahoma's Blake Boswell as he pushed the last match of the day to a super tiebreaker. Unfortunately the tiebreaker was won by Boswell 10-3; with a final result of 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (3).
The Tigers are back in action Friday, Feb. 20 when they host Loyola Marymount at 1:30 p.m. in the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.
