Houston, Texas - Even all-around scoring from the Pacific golf team gave the Tigers a hold on second place after two rounds of the Rice Intercollegiate. Senior Charlie Van Sicklen fired a second around, 3-under 69 to sit in fifth place with one round to go at Westwood Country Club.

Chilly and windy conditions at the Houston golf course moved scores around the leaderboard but every one of head coach Brandon Goethals' Tigers contributed during the teams' first tournament of the 2009 spring season. After Van Sicklen's combined 75-69 it was sophomores Patrick Kucich and TJ Bordeaux tied at 146 in 10th place. While Kucich shot back-to-back rounds of 73 Bordeaux went two over and even to match his teammate. Fellow sophomore Alex Johnson struggled on the greens for a 75-76 and Bayhaan Lakdawala, playing in his first tournament after redshirting last season posted an opening round 74.

"This is the type of play that I expect out of my guys," said Goethals. "A long, demanding course and everyone kept it together and kept us in it today."

Native university, Houston has the outright tournament lead after 36-holes with a two-round combined score of 575 while Pacific is tied with Liberty for second at 586. The teams conclude the tournament with a final 18 holes tomorrow morning starting at 8:30.
