Pacific Fights Hard but Falls to No. 2 Pepperdine, 3-0

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's volleyball team was defeated by the No. 2 Pepperdine Waves on Wednesday, Feb. 11, by a score of 3-0. Pacific fell to 2-11 overall, and 0-8 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Pepperdine increased its record to 9-2 on the season, and 6-0 MPSF.

The set score for the match were: 30-24, 30-24, 30-20.

In the first set the two teams battled through six tied scores. On the fourth tied score of the game, 4-4, the Tigers scored two straight points, on a Waves service error and a block assist by junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) and senior Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.) to make the score 6-4. A couple points later, Pepperdine had a two point run, cutting the Tigers' lead to 9-8, but Pacific answered back with a kill from Borchin and an attack error by the Waves, the score became 11-8. Later in the set, with the Tigers scored three consecutive points, on a kill by senior Jeff Hendershot (Claremont, Calif.), an ace by junior Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.), and an error by Pepperdine to push the Pacific lead to 16-12. Following this came a five point run by the Waves, giving them the lead, 17-16. Later, 24-22, Pepperdine had a four point run, increasing their advantage to 28-22. The Waves would finish out the set by a score of 30-24.

Similar to the second set, the Waves and the Tigers had six tied scores. The Tigers first run, was with the score 6-5. They scored three straight points on a service error by Pepperdine and two service aces by Forbes, making the score 9-5. Later Pacific was able to increase their lead to 15-9, but, unfortunately, it would not last for long. The Waves slowly edged back and eventually tied the game at 19-19. The game would tie again at 20-20, 21-21, and 22-22. At 22-22, Pepperdine scored six straight points to jump out in front by a score of 28-22. The final score of the set was 30-24.

The third set started off with the Tigers scoring the first three points, on an error by the Waves, a block assist by freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) and Borchin, and a kill from Pratte. With the Tigers out 5-2, Pepperdine would score five straight points to take the lead by a score of 7-5. Moments later, at 14-10, the Waves gathered another five points, making the score 19-10. Pacific fought at 26-16, and scored two points, to bring the score to 26-18, but Pepperdine was able to hold the Tigers off and win the set by a score of 30-20.

Borchin led the Tigers with eight kills, while Forbes had five kills, three service aces, and two block assists. Junior Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) had eight digs and 28 assists for Pacific.

Paul Carroll had a match-high of 23 kills for Pepperdine.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. against USC at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
