Stockton, Calif. - Despite 12 shots on goal, the Pacific women's soccer team wound up deadlocked in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 25.
With the tie, the Tigers' overall record moved to 9-5-3 and 3-2-1 in Big West Conference, while the Gauchos went to 8-8-2 and 5-1-1 in conference play.
Throughout the two overtime periods, Pacific controlled the pace of the game, out-shooting UC Santa Barbara 21 goals to eight, including holding a 19-6 advantage after regulation play.
The Tigers' best chance in the match came during the first overtime period. Less than one minute into the third period, sophomore Laura Hogan (Poway, Calif.) received the ball after sophomore Angelica Figueroa's (Linden, Calif.) corner kick at 90:51. Hogan took her shot from the left side of the goal without a defender directly in front of her, but kicked the ball high and out of play.
Pacific's single best opportunity occurred in the Tigers' next possession at 96:01, when sophomore Kristina Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif.) took the Tigers' final shot from five yards out to the left side of the goal, but just missed scoring by striking the right goal post.
The Gauchos tried to retaliate in the 98th minute, when Erin Ortega played off a corner kick by Jacqui Simon, and skyrocketed the ball over the crossbar and out of play.
During the second period of regulation play, Pacific tore away from the Gauchos and dominated play with 13 shots in the frame to UC Santa Barbara's three.
Figueroa led off the offensive attack in that period in the 50th minute, when a UC Santa Barbara foul gave the Tigers the ball from 13 yards out of the goal. Figueroa tried to make the best of the situation, but didn't bend the ball far enough, shooting wide to the right of the post.
At 52:33, junior Kim Hargrave (La Palma, Calif.) tried her hand at scoring, when she landed a pass from Figueroa. Hargrave took a shot from 18 yards out and to the right of the goal, but soared it high and out of play. But Pacific regained possession of the ball and less than one minute later junior Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii) dribbled past her defender up the right side of the pitch. Teramae tried to tap the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, but Gaucho goalie Tammy Lenham was there to record the save. Lenham tallied 12 saves in the match.
Freshman Lauren Olvera (Whittier, Calif.) used a throw-in during the 57th minute to find the feet of freshman Laura Hernandez (Seattle, Wash.), who was positioned less than two yards in front of the goal, with only Lenham behind her. Hernandez grounded the ball at 57:28 and with her back to the goal, kicked the ball behind her in attempt to find the back of the net. However, Lenham once again was strategically placed, and stopped the play before Pacific could record its first goal of the game.
The game's first period started off slowly, with defensive displays from both teams. Neither team fired off a shot until Olvera's first attempt in the 16th minute.
Offensively, Hogan led all players in the match with five shots, but Hernandez's four attempts were the most on goal by any one player. Junior goalie Jill Medigovich (San Diego, Calif.) kept Pacific scoreless for 110 minutes and tallied four saves in the contest to drop her goals against average to 0.81.
Pacific next returns to action on the road when they travel to UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 30. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
