Stockton, Calif. - A night in which the defense was dominant, the Pacific women's soccer team and the Rebels of UNLV battled to a 0-0 draw on Friday, September 28. The tie moved the Tigers record to 5-2-2 overall while the Rebels improved to 4-2-3. Pacific moved their unbeaten streak at home to five games this season as the Tigers have yet to relinquish a goal on their home field.
Led by senior Montez Harrison (Oakland, Calif.) in the middle, the Tigers' defense posted their sixth shutout of the season as they were able to hold the Rebels' attack in check for all 110:00 minutes of the double overtime contest. With seniors Natalie McCrackin (Rio Linda, Calif.) and Alisha Bledsoe (Valley Springs, Calif.) on the wings and Harrison and sophomore Chelsea Gomes (Coto de Caza, Calif.) up the middle, the Tigers were able to hold the Rebels to just 11 shots with three on frame.
Senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) picked up her 20th career shutout in goal for Pacific as she becomes just the second 'keeper in program history to hit the 20 shutout plateau. Souza played a solid game between the posts with three saves on the night as she was able to control the flow of the game through the box, never hesitating to come off her line when needed to.
Souza's counterpart, Alicia Lugo, picked up her fifth shutout of the season for the Rebels as she tallied four saves on the night on 10 Tiger shots. Lugo had help from her defensive backline as the Rebels were led by Brie Kuhne who was able to keep the Tigers' potent attack in check for much of the night.
The Tigers did have a few chances throughout the night to score with their best chance coming just minutes into the contest. McCrackin, playing up front from her defensive position, crossed a ball from the left sideline into the middle of the box right to the head of senior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.), but Van Dorn's flick sailed just over the crossbar and out of play. Van Dorn tallied a game high five shots with three on goal throughout the game.
Pacific will be back in action on Sunday, September 30, as they host No. 22 San Diego at Stagg Memorial Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
