Teramae's Two Goals Leads Pacific To A 2-1 Conference In Over Cal State Northridge

Oct. 7, 2007

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - In dramatic fashion, the Pacific women's soccer team picked up their first conference win of the season with a 2-1 overtime win over Cal State Northridge on Sunday, October 7. The win moved the Tigers to 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action while the Matadors fell to 2-8-1 overall and 0-2-0 in Big West play.

After finishing the non-conference season with nine points on two goals and five assists, freshman Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii) wasted little time getting into the scorers column in Big West play as she matched her non-conference goal total in a single day with two goals against the Matadors.

Teramae got the Tigers off to a fast start against Cal State Northridge as she put Pacific ahead by one goal in just the fifth minute of play. Pressuring the Matadors' defense as they looked to clear the ball forward, Teramae stripped Northridge's left back at the top corner of the 18 to create her own scoring opportunity. With Kellie Drenner, Cal State Northridge's 'keeper, up and off of her line, Teramae chipped a shot over Drenner's head and into the back of the net for her first career Big West goal and third strike of the season.

Despite Teramae's goal and steady pressure on the offensive end, the Tigers would not carry their one goal lead into the halftime break as the Matadors' would tie the game at one goal a piece after being awarded a penalty kick in the 30th minute of play. Susie Mischenko converted the attempt for her third goal of the season.

The game would remain tied for the remainder of the half and through another scoreless 45 minutes as the contest would need extra time to decide a winner. Pacific had many chances in the second half to end the game in regulation, firing off seven second half shots, all of which were on goal. Drenner kept her team in the contest with six saves in the half while the Matadors' backline picked up a team save in the 64th minute on one of senior Mandi Van Dorn's (Danville, Calif.) game-high five shots.

With the game tied, it would not take long for the Tigers to grab the sudden-victory win from the Matadors as Pacific was awarded its own penalty kick just three minutes into the overtime period when senior Natalie McCrackin (Rio Linda, Calif.) was tripped from behind in the box while attempting to create a scoring opportunity for the Tigers.

With a penalty kick awarded, Teramae stepped to the spot and calmly knocked home her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season to seal the conference win for the Tigers. The goal was her second career game-winning strike and ended a two game losing streak for Pacific. Teramae took just two shots in the game as she made both count on the scoreboard.

In goal, senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) produced two saves on five Matador shots. Drenner tallied eight saves on the day as the Tigers took 13 shots with 11 coming on frame.

Pacific will hit the road for a pair of conference road games with the first coming at UC Riverside on Friday, October 12. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
