Northridge, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team found themselves on the wrong side of a golden goal for the first time this season, falling to Cal State Northridge, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday, October 15. With the loss the Tigers fell to 10-4-1 overall and 2-3 in Big West play while the Matadors improved to 10-6-0 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
The Matadors struck first in the back-and-forth contest, netting with just :14 seconds left in the first half to go into the break with a one goal lead. Kelly Ross fired a deep shot towards the Tigers' net that deflected off a Pacific defender and redirected the opposite direction of junior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) who was diving to make the save.
Down one goal, the Tigers came back out of the break and took control of the game, netting a game-tying goal in the 56th minute off the foot of junior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.). Taking a pass from junior Montez Harrison (Oakland, Calif.) at the top of 18, Van Dorn blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for her seventh goal of the season, tying the conference high. The assist was Harrison's first of the season.
Locked in a 1-1 tie, the teams headed into extra time where each posted one shot. Pacific had a chance to win the game early in the overtime period, but senior Kelsey Nagel's (Lynnwood, Wash.) strike sailed just high of the cross bar. With a second chance, the Matadors took advantage, netting the game-winning goal in the 95th minute of the contest. Rachel Gillis headed in the score, taking a ball off of the foot of Sara Davis who sent a free kick into the box from nearly 40 yards out.
On the day the Matadors outshot the Tigers 14-10 with Souza producing three saves compared to April Cline's one save.
Pacific will next be in action on Friday, October 20, as it plays host to Big West Conference foe Cal Poly at Stagg Memorial Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
