Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers women's soccer team got an early goal and a late save from sophomore Carla Vellutini to earn a 1-0 win over the Toreros on Sunday, Sept. 25. The win moved Pacific to 6-3-1 this season, while San Diego is now 3-6.

Vellutini got the Tigers on top in the 14th minute as she nailed a header from inside the goal box past Torero freshman goal keeper Brittany Cameron off of a corner kick. Pacific freshman Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) sent the ball to Vellutini for the assist.

As the clock ticked down, San Diego had several chances to tie the game. The Toreros best scoring opportunities came back-to-back as San Diego junior Shannon Sullivan attempted a long shot from 30 yards out hitting the left post and bouncing out. The shot rebounded 10 yards away to San Diego's Veronica Ambort who sent the ball towards the goal, but Vellutini came storming in to preserve the Tigers' win.

The Pacific offense kept had 12 shots and seven corners in the game.

The Tigers victory is Pacific's first over San Diego. The two teams played twice in the 90's, with the Toreros winning both matchups. A perennial NCAA team, San Diego was an NCAA Tournament team last year in 2004.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 30 as Pacific opens the Big West Conference season by hosting Long Beach State at 7 p.m. in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Memorial Stadium.
