Volleyball Upends First-Place LMU in Five Set Thriller

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific volleyball rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the West Coast Conference leading LMU Lions in five-sets (14-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14) in front of the home crowd at the Alex G. Spanos Center Thursday night.

The Tigers (17-11, 7-9 WCC) leaned on a balanced attack to pull off the upset, with graduates Alexa Edwards, Darina Kumanova, and junior Emily Van Groningen all swinging for double-digit kills.

Edwards was the team leader with 15 kills and brought her season total to 504 and career total of 1,866. Her season total officially entered her into the record book as the tenth most in a single season in program history. 15 kills also moved Edwards into second place on the career-kills list – passing Elsa Stegemann.

Kumanova's 14 kills were the most she's swung for since the 16 she got against Iowa State to open the season. The graduate has been a focal point of the Pacific offense of late, reaching the double digit kill milestone in three of the past four matches.

Van Groningen tallied her kills in efficient fashion, reaching 13 kills in just 27 attacks for a final hitting percentage of .444. Of the seven times she has eclipsed ten kills this season, she's hit .400 or better in four of them. The junior also added a season high four solo-blocks.

As a team, Pacific's defense held LMU to a .194 hitting percentage, making the Tigers the only team to hold LMU (21-5, 13-2 WCC) under a .200 team hitting percentage twice this season.

Four players logged double-digit digs, including Edwards (11), and senior Jenna Heller (11). However, the top two defenders for Pacific were junior Jayhlin Swain's team leading 25 and Kumanova's career-high 21 digs.

Coupled with their offensive outputs, both Edwards and Kumanova notched double doubles. Jenna Heller logged her own double-double setting up the attack, finishing with 24 assists and 11 digs.

Pacific will stay home for its next match, hosting Pepperdine on Saturday. First ball from the Alex G. Spanos Center is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
