Volleyball Falls in Four at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball program dropped a hard-fought match to Santa Clara 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 25-18) Thursday inside the Leavey Center.

Graduate Alex Edwards led the Tigers (12-7, 2-5 WCC) in kills, notching 16 more to her illustrious career. Edwards also led the Tigers in aces, serving up a pair in the second set.

On the defensive end, junior libero Jayhlin Swain dug 14 balls to lead the team and increased her conference leading number of digs to 320 on the season.

The Tigers were unable to hold onto an early five-point lead in the first set, peaking at 10-6, before conceding a 16-6 Bronco run to trail 22-16. In the second set, Pacific was unable to close set points at 24-23 and 25-24.

The third set was a reversal of fortune for Pacific, enduring an early 9-4 Santa Clara lead to ultimately prevail 25-23. Junior Emily Van Groningen was a force in the set, converting five of six attacks into kills while graduate Margherita Giani tallied three of her six kills in the frame.

The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair until Santa Clara rattled off a 10-2 match closing run.

Coming up next for Pacific, the team continues its tour around the bay area, taking on the San Francisco Dons for the first time this season. First ball from the Sobrato Center is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
