Volleyball Cruises to Homecoming Sweep over Gonzaga

STOCKTON, Calif. – In full control from start to finish, the Pacific volleyball program shined in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-11) sweep over Gonzaga on Homecoming Saturday at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Pacific (12-6, 2-4 WCC) hit for a season-high .347 mark as a team. It included a third set of .419. On the flip side, the Bulldogs (1-14, 0-5 WCC) were held to a .021 clip, which was a season-low for Pacific's opposition this year.

Senior Alexa Edwards recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 10 digs. She hit for a season-high .438 percentage on 32 swings.

Aiding the attack was graduate Margherita Giani and junior Emily Van Groningen with eight and seven kills, respectively. Senior Jenna Heller distributed 38 assists.

In the back, senior Megan Nishimura tallied a match-high 13 digs and junior Jayhlin Swain scooped up 10.

The Tigers came out of the gates on fire and won the first seven points on graduate Darina Kumanova's serve. Pacific increased it to 13-4 on a kill by sophomore Shelby Gorospe, and remained in front 18-9 on a spike by Giani. A kill by Edwards made it 24-16 and the frame ended on an error by the Bulldogs.

The score was tied 6-6 in the second when a kill by Edwards sparked a 5-0 spurt to go up 11-6. Two more kills by Edwards gave the Tigers a 15-8 edge, and Gonzaga called timeout trailing 18-9. Pacific won the set on a kill by freshman Zoe John.

Pacific ran away with the third early-on. Back-to-back blocks by Giani put the Tigers in front 11-3, and a block by Van Groningen upped it to 15-7. An ace by Kumanova changed it to 20-8, and the match ended on a kill by Edwards.

The Tigers are now 20-5 all-time against Gonzaga and have won eight straight meetings.

Pacific will hit the road next weekend with a 6 p.m. Thursday match at Santa Clara followed by a 1 p.m. Saturday match at San Francisco. The next home match is Thursday, Oct. 24 when the Tigers host San Diego at 6 p.m. at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
