Box Score 2 The University of the Pacific volleyball team extended its winning streak to three with a pair of wins at the EWU Tournament on Friday. Both wins came in straight sets for the Tigers, who defeated the Wolf Pack of Nevada, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 to begin the day and 25-22, 26-24, 25-12 over the Redhawks of Seattle.
In the first match of the day, Pacific raced out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set that saw Nevada draw within one, 21-20 after a four-point run midway through the set. The Tigers came right back with a 4-1 run to take the opening set by a 25-21 margin. The second set saw Nevada take the early lead with a 4-1 lead before a 5-0 run midway through the set put the Tigers ahead 18-14 that featured a pair of service aces and a kill by
Biamba Kabengele, a block by
Emily Van Groningen and a kill by
Alexa Edwards in the spurt. Â Nevada managed to rally to tie the set at 22 but a pair of kills by Kabengele and a block by the tandem of Kabengele and
Logan Blutreich put Pacific ahead two sets to none. The third set indicative of the match was tied on five occasions, including at 23 before back-to-back kills by
Alexa Edwards clinched the victory.
Edwards nearly had a double double with 15 kills and nine digs, whereas Kabengele added 13 kills to go along with three aces and pair of blocks.
Jenna Heller had a double double with 28 assists and 11 digs, plus
Megan Nishimura added 26 digs in the win.
The second match of the day against Seattle was like the first one as it was tightly contested between the two teams. The first set was tied on nine occasions but the Tigers rallied for the win behind a block by the duo of
Ramonni Cook and
Emily Van Groningent, a kill by Edwards and a service ace by
Zoe Morales clinched the first set for the Tigers, 25-22. Again, in the second set, the two teams went back and forth as the set was tied on eight instances. Facing set point at 24-23, Pacific rattled off three-straight points to secure a two set to none advantage. The third set was dominated by the Tigers as they broke away after a tie at 6 to take a 16-9 lead after a 10-3 run. Pacific secured the match with a 9-2 run to end the set to clinch the match.
A balanced attack for Pacific in the win included,
Emily Van Groningen, who had a team-high 11 kills.
Biamba Kabengele added 10 and
Darina Kumanova provided eight.
Ramonni Cook and Van Groningen each had a hand on five blocks.
Jenna Heller added 23 assists and
Megan Nishimura provided eight digs.
With the two wins, Pacific will face host Eastern Washington for a chance at the tournament title on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
