CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pacific women's water polo team (11-4) took two wins on the first day of the 2023 Convergence Tournament at Pomona Pitzer.
"Today's wins were a great team effort," said Head Coach James Graham. "We learned a lot of valuable lessons that will serve us well in the future."
The Tigers defeated the Sharks of Long Island (6-8) by 10, scoring 21-11 for the first game Friday morning. In the afternoon, the Tigers took on the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific (7-9) and won 15-4.
Freshman Dora Alaksza and sophomore Szamira Koppány led the Tigers with seven goals each between the two games. Alaksza scored five against the Sharks, and Koppány scored four.
Sophomore Hila Futorian, freshman Alicia Petkov and graduate student Lucy Davis each scored four goals; Futorian had all four against the Sharks, and Petkov scored all of hers against the Sunbirds.
Graduate student Brianna Utas and sophomore Ilyana Zlobinsky each found the back of the net three times for Pacific. Sophomore Addison McGowan dented the twine twice. Juniors June Akpata and Annikah Lillie each put one in the net for the Tigers.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Clara Vulpisi had six saves in game one against the Sharks.
The Tigers are back in the pool Saturday against two more teams at the 2023 Convergence Tournament.
