Malibu, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team (10–14, 5–8) scored 22 points in the second quarter en route to a 66-59 win over Pepperdine (7–16, 2–11).
"To go on a streak here feels really good," said Head Coach Bradley Davis on the three-game win streak. "This one we had to gut out, it was not pretty basketball for a lot of it, but we did gut it out. We missed some free throws, which we normally make, and some good shots we created. But for us to gut it out on the road on a Saturday, we will take it."
Junior Liz Smith continued her domination of the WCC, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds, both team-leading marks. Sophomore Diamond Richardson dropped 10 points, and junior Erica Adams added nine points and two assists.
The first quarter was a slow burn, with neither squad scoring for the first 2:30. Senior Sam Ashby put on a show in the quarter, scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds. The Waves took a six-point lead heading into the second quarter.
The two teams stayed close for most of the second quarter, with Pacific holding the lead for the final four minutes of the quarter. The Tigers scored the quarter's final four points to take a six-point lead into halftime. Smith scored 10 of her 17 points in the quarter, while Richardson scored six of her 10 points.
Pepperdine battled back in the third quarter, taking a one-point lead with 1:47 remaining. A three from Smith retook the lead for the Tigers, and a layup from sophomore Elizabeth Elliott with under a minute left in the quarter helped Pacific take a two-point lead into the final quarter.
Pacific did not trail in the final quarter, holding off a Pepperdine comeback attempt by hitting timely free throws and playing a solid press defense. With multiple Waves in foul trouble, the Tigers were able to use that to their advantage and maintain a multiple-possession lead for the entire quarter.
Next week, Pacific is back at home, hosting Santa Clara and San Francisco.
