STOCKTON, Calif. – For the second time this season, the Pacific women's basketball team (7-11, 2-5) will host a ranked opponent, #20 Gonzaga (17-2, 7-0) at. 11 a.m. on Thursday for Education Day. Portland (12-6, 6-1) follows up at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the Tigers host the top two teams in the WCC.
Pacific is fifth in the WCC in scoring offense and defense, scoring 68.8 points and allowing 70.4 points per game. Senior
Sam Ashby has been on a tear, scoring double-digit points in five straight games and is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game. Junior
Liz Smith leads the team, averaging 13.1 points per game while being sixth in the conference in three-point shooting. Sophomore
Anaya James leads the team with 88 assists and is second in the conference in assists per game, dishing out 5.5.
The only team to remain undefeated in the conference, the Zags defeated Portland 73-66 last weekend as the top two teams faced for the first time this season. Gonzaga has four players averaging double digits, with Yvonna Ejim leading the team at 16.1 points per game. Brynna Maxwell leads the nation in free throw percentage at 98.1 percent. As a team, the Bulldogs are shooting 80.1 percent from the charity stripe, ranking first in the country. The Zags are second in the nation in three-point percentage, shooting 41.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Portland had won seven straight games before facing Gonzaga. Despite the impressive record, the Pilots have struggled on the road, going 2-3 in away matchups this season. Alex Fowler leads the team in scoring and is second in the conference averaging 17.7 points. Fowler leads the WCC in field goal percentage, shooting 63.3 percent. The Pilots had won three straight games by 10 or more points before facing Gonzaga.
