Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Women's Water Polo team made its home opener look easy on Saturday, beating Cal State East Bay, 15-8.
"It was a great opportunity to play a quality team at home and get a chance to have our full roster together and see where we're at after making adjustments from the first weekend," said Head Coach James Graham referring to the team's play at the Cal Cup last weekend. "What we've made progress on and what we need to continue to work on."
The Tigers looked strong, with six players scoring goals and five players had assists.
Mariana Duarte led the Tigers with seven goals.
Toula Falvey had three.
Emma Myall had two.
Brianna Utas,
Ana Martinez do Amaral, and
Lucia Sarimsakci each had one.
Szamira Koppány led the team with six assists.
Lucy Davis and
Hila Futorian each had three. Duarte and do Amaral each had two.
Clara Vulpisi had 11 saves, and
Isabelle Knittle had one.
"Mariana is fantastic. Clara did a great job in the cage. Brianna is such a smart defender for us. She covered up a number of scenarios that could have cost us more than they did," said Head Coach James Graham. "It was nice to get a chance to get a number of the girls opportunities to play to showcase what they can do and where they're at. So, it was a great chance to see all of our players out there battling and competing."
"I think there is a lot of steps forward we made in the last week on offense and still defensively some things we can do, especially try to clean up some of the fouls getting called against us, so there is progress, but it's a journey," said Graham. "We're excited. We have two days off, and then we'll get back after it. The future looks bright for this team."
The Tigers travel to Fresno to play Biola and Long Beach State on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. The team will be back at home to host UCLA on Sunday, Mar. 6, at 1:30 p.m.
