STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers season is finally here, and they will kick off the 2022 season by hosting Northern Colorado for a four-game series.
The Tigers are looking to improve under second-year head coach
Chris Rodriguez after finishing the 2021 season 16-33. The Tigers were selected 10th in the WCC Preseason Poll, which the coaches voted on in the conference.
Thomas Gavello adds to his list of preseason accolades as he was named to the All-WCC Preseason Team. Gavello was also named to the Perfect Game All-WCC Team and the D1Baseball Preseason Top 50 third basemen list.
On the mound,
Elijah Birdsong will lead a rotation that had a 6.26 ERA last season. Birdsong will be followed up by
Marv Guarin,
Hunter Hayes and
Zach Patterson. Guarin appeared in 17 games last season with one start, Hayes started 10 games with 13 appearances and was second in strikeouts. Patterson was tied for the second-most appearances with 19 and had the lowest opponent batting average at .228
James Arakawa led the Tigers in batting average last season at .339 and tied for the team lead in stolen bases with nine. Gavello led the team with 10 home runs, and Jermey Lea was second with seven.
