STANFORD, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team dropped its opening game of the 2022-23 season Monday afternoon, falling to Stanford, 88-78, at Maples Pavilion.
"We're proud of this team and what they were able to accomplish today," Assistant Head Coach
Josh Newman stated after the game. "If we played as we did in the second half, there might have been a different outcome."
Newman filled in as head coach for
Leonard Perry, who did not make the trip due to illness.
Jordan Ivy-Curry led the Tigers (0-1) throughout the contest, scoring a team-high 23 points with 13 coming in the second half. Shooting 52.9 percent (nine-for-17) from the field, Ivy-Curry was crucial in the team's comeback efforts as he connected on 40 percent of his attempts from the three-point line. Along with offensive production, the sophomore from La Marque, Texas, performed on defense as he collected two rebounds and two of the team's seven steals.
"Jordan is a shot maker," Newman added. "He's the one guy on this team that has proven he can make difficult shots … we hope he can continue making those throughout the year."
Donovan Williams was also productive on the offensive side of the ball, tallying a career-high 17 points. Scoring in double figures for the first time in his career, Williams connected on 63.6 percent (seven-for-11) of his shots and recorded one three-point basket.
The Tigers kept the game close throughout the first half as the Cardinal (1-0) led wire-to-wire. Never trailing by more than eight points through the first 14 minutes of play, the Tigers cut the lead to two, 27-25, with 6:30 remaining on the clock. The Cardinal responded, embarked on a 17-7 run to close out the half, and led by 12, 44-32 at the halftime break.
The Tigers came out slow to start the final 20 minutes of play as the Cardinal lead ballooned to 19, 53-34, at the 16:53 mark of the second half. The Tigers, however, battled back into the game and outscored the Cardinal, 26-10, in the following 9:52. During the run, Ivy-Curry poured in nine points, while Williams added four. Moe
Odum scored eight points in his collegiate debut, with five coming during the second-half comeback.
Trailing 63-60 at the 7:01 mark, the Tigers continued to fight in the game's later stages before the Cardinal secured the win with a 25-18 run.
Pacific returns to action at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, Nov. 13, as the Tigers travel to take on North Dakota State at the
Scheels Center.
