STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers Women's Water Polo team closed out its competition at the Cal Cup with two close games. The Tigers fell 14-13 against San Jose State and 6-5 against UC Davis.
Against the Trojans, the Tigers battled through four quarters and two overtime periods. Toula Falvey and Hila Futorian scored four goals, and Mariana Duarte, Brianna Utas, Ana Martinez do Amaral, Lucy Davis, and Ilyana Zlobinsky scored one. Goalkeeper Clara Vulpisi made 13 saves.
Pacific lead throughout the first, second and third quarters 4-2, 9-5 and 11-9, respectively. In the fourth, the Trojans scored four, and the Tigers scored two, tying the game at 13 each. The first overtime period was scoreless, and the Trojans scored with 32 seconds left in the second overtime. Pacific capitalized on three of their eight power play opportunities, while the Trojans only scored on one of seven.
Against the Aggies, the Tigers played tough through four quarters, leading 2-0 in the first, 4-2 in the second and 5-4 in the third. In the fourth, the Aggies scored with 7:11 left to tie it up, and 2:59 left to take the lead.
The Tigers capitalized on one of eight power plays and the Aggies on one of three. Mariana Duarte and Brianna Utas scored two goals for the Tigers, and Hila Futorian scored one. Goalkeeper Clara Vulpisi made 11 saves.
The Tigers take on Cal State East Bay at home on February 5 at noon.
