Box Score 2 STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Women's Water Polo team opened their season today with two matches in Berkeley at the Cal Cup.
In the first match, #15 Pacific dropped a 10-9 decision to #13 Long Beach State after leading at intermission, 4-3. Toula Falvey and Mariana Duarte each had three goals for the Tigers. Ana Martinez do Amaral had a pair of goals. The Beach scored three power-play goals on five attempts, while the Tigers only got one power-play goal in 11 opportunities.
Each team scored three in the first period, and Pacific recorded the only tally in the second quarter for the 4-3 edge. Pacific pushed the lead to 7-5 in the third before The Beach responded with two goals to tie the score, 7-7, heading into the final quarter. The Beach scored three more unanswered goals in the fourth to take a 10-7 lead. Pacific's Duarte scored her third with 2:06 remaining, and Falvey tallied with six seconds to play to account for the 10-9 final.
In the second match, Pacific faced #4 Cal, falling 11-5 with a close first quarter at 4-2 for Cal, third quarter 2-1 for Cal and fourth quarter 2-1 for Pacific. A four-goal second quarter helped seal the deal for Cal in the 11-5 victory.
Scoring was a team effort, as five different Tigers had goals; Toula Falvey, Mariana Duarte, Brianna Utas, Hila Futorian and Ilyana Zlobinsky. Similar to the previous game, Pacific's opponent capitalized on power plays, scoring three goals on three attempts, while Pacific was zero for eight. The Tigers never gave up, Utas's goal coming with only four seconds left in the game.
The Tigers continue their season at the Cal Cup on Sunday, battling San Jose State and UC Davis.
