THINGS TO KNOW:
  • Continuing their homestand after a historic victory over No. 18 Stanford on Wednesday, Apr. 28, the Tigers took the series opener over San Francisco, 8-7, in walk-off fashion on Friday, Apr. 30 before dropping their final two matchups against the Dons last weekend.
  • Leading the charge, junior James Arakawa currently ranks third in the West Coast Conference in batting average entering the weekend with a .364 clip. Overall, three Tigers rank in the top six in the conference in OPS- senior Alex LeForestier (.431, fourth), Arakawa (.430, fifth) and sophomore Thomas Gavello (.429, sixth). Additionally, Gavello has impressed with the stick in his second year in Stockton as he also sits fourth in the WCC in runs (32) and slugging percentage (.550) while tying for fifth with seven total home runs this season.
  • Historically, Santa Clara leads the all-time time series between the two programs 89-51, dating back to 1985. Despite a 5-5 record over their last ten contests against the Broncos, Pacific swept SCU in a three-game set the last time these two programs met in 2019, which included two one-run victories for the Tigers.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS:
  • In a similar situation as the Tigers, the Broncos sit ninth in the WCC with a 6-15 record in conference play this season. Overall, Santa Clara is averaging 4.8 runs per game while hitting .239 at the plate as a team. On the mound, SCU has been middle of the road as well, allowing 5.3 runs per game for a team ERA of 4.30 and an opponent batting average of .240.
  • Individually, the Broncos are led offensively by Jake MacNichols, who currently is tied for first in the conference with nine total home runs. Overall, Santa Clara ranks third as a team in long balls with 34 on the year. Additionally, Cole Kitchen is tied for second in the WCC with five wins on the rubber while Freddie Erlandson is ninth with a 3.09 ERA.
  • Last time out, SCU took the series finale from Loyola Marymount on the road in an 11-7 win on Sunday, May 2. After beginning conference play with a 4-1 mark, the Broncos had recorded only one win in their previous ten conference contests prior to this victory, which was a 9-7 win over San Francisco at home on Sunday, Apr. 11.
