STOCKTON, Calif. – Closing out their 2021 campaign with one final contest, the Pacific baseball team (17-33, 7-20) could not secure one last win on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers fell to Pepperdine, 16-2, at Klein Family Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Jumping out to the early lead, the Waves plated two runs on three hits in the top of the first before adding three runs in the second for a 5-0 advantage.
- Despite a single from senior Alex LeForestier in the home half of the first, the Tigers struggled offensively to open the ballgame as Pepperdine tacked on one more run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to extend the score to 8-0 in the favor through six innings complete. Shortly thereafter, the Waves pushed their lead to eleven with three more runs on two hits in seventh.
- Finding a little bit of life late, Pacific scored their only two runs of the contest in the eighth, which came via a two-run single from junior Jeremy Lea.
- Pouring on five more runs on five hits in the ninth, Pepperdine unfortunately hung on to down the Tigers and secure the series victory by a final score of 16-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- In his final game in the Orange & Black, LeForestier finished two-for-three on the day as he officially tied junior James Arakawa for the team lead in batting average with a .339 clip. Impressively, this average ranks the duo tied fifth in the WCC.
- On the mound, four seniors took the ball for Pacific to start as Hunter Schilperoort, Henrik Reinertsen, Joe Solomin and Nick Swanson combined to toss 8.0 innings on the afternoon.
- Overall, sophomore Thomas Gavello finishes the 2021 season as one of the most feared hitters in the conference. In the final statistical rankings, the infielder ranks third in on-base percentage (.458), third in runs scored (43), fourth in slugging percentage (.601), sixth in home runs (10) and ninth in batting average (.335).
- Notably, Arakawa (tied-fifth), LeForestier (tied-fifth) and Gavello (ninth) all finished in the top ten in final batting average in the conference. On the basepaths, Arakawa and senior Wyatt Hoffman tied for eighth with nine steals each while senior Joe Fitzhugh paced the WCC with 18 runners caught stealing.
THANK YOU, FANS:
Although this season was not ideal for fans and spectators, the Pacific baseball program would like to thank all for the tremendous support this year. While we are thankful we were able to get family and friends back together towards the end of the season, we look forward to hosting any and all at Klein Family Field next year and in the future. Go Tigers!
