Early Deficit Too Much for Pacific in Opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – Kicking off their final regular season series of the year, the Pacific baseball team fell victim to an early deficit against Pepperdine (19-24, 11-14) on Thursday night at Klein Family Field as the Tigers were defeated by the Waves, 13-6.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting off to a fast start, Pepperdine recorded five straight hits to begin the ballgame, including a two-run home run from WCC-leader Billy Cook. Following another RBI groundout, the Waves held a 4-0 advantage after the first inning of play.
  • With neither team able to do much in the second, Pepperdine poured it on with five more runs on five hits and one Tiger error to take a commanding 9-0 lead after the third. Shortly thereafter, they pushed the score to 11-0 on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. Keeping their foot on the pedal, the Waves tacked on what would be their final runs of the night in the fifth on a two-run single from Ryan Johnson, extending their advantage to 13-0.
  • In the home half of the fifth, Pacific finally got on the board with three runs on four hits, which was highlighted by a scorched two-run single from senior Alex LeForestier that trimmed the Tiger deficit to 13-3. Moving into the seventh, UOP added their fourth run on an RBI double down the right field line from junior Jeremy Lea as the catcher drove LeForestier home on the extra base hit.
  • Putting up a fight until the end, the Tigers were down to their final strike when Lea deposited his seventh home run of the year over the left field wall, cutting the score to 13-6. Unfortunately, Pepperdine would get the final out they needed to hold on and secure the series-opening victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • With his single in the fifth, LeForestier notched his 150th career hit as a Tiger. Overall, the Sacramento native sits second on the team and eleventh in the WCC in batting average with a .329 clip after Thursday. Notably, his three-for-five performance also ties him with sophomore Thomas Gavello and junior James Arakawa with 16 multi-hit games this year.
  • Impressing at the dish, Lea tallied his second game with three or more RBI, which now gives him the team lead with six total games with two or more RBI this season. Additionally, the backstop also ranks second on the team and is tied for twelfth in the conference with twelve long balls.
  • On the mound, sophomore Hunter Hayes logged his longest outing since Mar. 6 at CSU Bakersfield, going 5.0 innings and striking out seven batters while only allowing two earned runs.
