Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Beginning their final road trip of the 2021 season on Friday night, the Pacific baseball team (15-31, 5-17) was unable to come out victorious in their series opener at Loyola Marymount (19-28, 12-13), falling to the Lions, 7-2, at Page Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Despite a double from sophomore Thomas Gavello to lead off the game, Pacific could not piece together their timely hitting to open the contest as the second year infielder was left on base by the Tigers in the top of the first. In the home half of the inning, the Lions took an early lead with three runs on four hits of their own to begin the scoring.
- One inning later, LMU extended their advantage to 4-0 on an RBI single into centerfield from Julian Bury. Responding in the middle innings, Pacific got on the board via an RBI groundout from senior Alex LeForestier in their turn at the dish in the fourth. However, the Lions would use another three-run, four-hit inning to widen the gap in the bottom of the fifth as the jumped out to a 7-1 lead through five innings complete.
- Shortly thereafter, Pacific inched closer in the sixth on an RBI single from senior Charles Middleton as the Tigers trimmed their deficit to 7-2.
- Although UOP notched one hit in each of their final three plate appearances, the offense could not string together the necessary rally for a comeback in the late innings to begin the series. Following a quality start from Josh Agnew and dominant performances out of the bullpen from Diego Barrer and Holden Christian, LMU defended their home field in game one by closing out the Tigers by a final score of 7-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Seeing his overall average climb to .325 following tonight's contest, which is good for third on the team, LeForestier extended his reached base streak to 16 games while also pushing his hitting streak to eight games with his single in the top of the sixth.
- At the plate, Gavello also notched his twelfth multi-hit contest of the season while Middleton logged at least two hits for the seventh time in 2021.
- On the mound, junior Dylan Pottgieser recorded his third longest outing of the year with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief on Friday as the right hander struck out at least three batters for the fifth time this season.
