Tigers Fall to LBSU in Series Finale

STOCKTON, Calif. – After taking down the Dirtbags in an epic comeback victory on Saturday, the Pacific baseball team (9-23, 0-9) could not repeat their success in the series finale on Sunday, falling to Long Beach State (10-9, 8-8), 28-10.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • In a game that saw 38 total runs cross the plate, the Tigers jumped on the board first in the opening frame with five runs on three hits, which included two-run doubles from freshmen Chaz Myers and Colby Canales. At the end of one, Pacific held an early 5-0 lead over LBSU.
  • Answering right back, the Dirtbags pushed across five runs on three hits of their own in the top of the second to even the contest. However, sophomore Thomas Gavello responded to lead off the home half of the inning as the infielder launched his second home run in as many days to give UOP the lead back, 6-5. After junior James Arakawa came around to score due to interference running the basepaths, Pacific remained on top of Long Beach State through two innings, 7-5.
  • Unable to find much momentum on the mound all afternoon, the Dirtbags tied the game again with back-to-back home runs to begin the third as the two teams traded blows through the first three innings. Heading into the fourth, the score was knotted at seven.
  • Exploding offensively as a team, LBSU took their first lead of the afternoon with two runs on one hit in fourth, followed by six runs in the fifth, three runs in the sixth and nine runs in the seventh. Although the Tigers tacked on one run each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, Pacific trailed 27-9 at the seventh inning stretch.
  • Aiming for some late game magic, seniors Alex LeForestier and Charles Middleton led off the eighth with back-to-back doubles down the left field line as Pacific plated their final of the afternoon in the inning.
  • Adding one final run to their ledger in the ninth, Long Beach State experienced little resistance form the Tiger lineup down the stretch as the Dirtbags took the series finale by a final score of 28-10.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • For Canales, Sunday marked a career day for the Orange, Calif. native as the first year Tiger finished 2-for-5 with a team-high four RBI. Impressively, these RBIs marked the first of his collegiate career. Additionally, Myers knocked in his first runs since his game-winning double against Fresno State on Mar. 17.
  • With another longball on Sunday, Gavello now leads Pacific in runs (24) total bases (50), slugging percentage (.495) and home runs (4).
  • Heating up at the dish, LeForestier recorded his third three-hit performance in his last eight games after finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored against LBSU.
