Pacific Storms Back to Even Series vs. LBSU

STOCKTON, Calif. – Storming back from eight runs down, the Pacific baseball team (9-22, 0-9) evened the series against Long Beach State (9-8, 8-8) in thrilling fashion on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Dirtbags, 17-12, in a contest that stretched over four hours.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Beginning the scoring, LBSU pushed across the first three runs of the game on three hits in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead through the opening frame.
  • With no action in the second, the Dirtbags extended their advantage to four with another run on two hits in the top of the fourth. However, the Tigers quickly responded by getting on the board with an RBI single from senior Charles Middleton as junior James Arakawa came around to trim Pacific's deficit to 4-1.
  • Just one inning later, Long Beach State broke the game open with five runs on six hits in the fifth as they held a 9-1 advantage through four and a half complete. Never giving in, the Tigers began to chip away in their turn at the plate in the fifth as Middleton stayed hot by doubling home Arakawa and senior Alex LeForestier to cut the Dirtbag lead to 9-3.
  • Trading blows once again, LBSU added two runs in the sixth as the score remained in favor of the visitors heading into the bottom of the inning, 11-3. Displaying power across all parts of the field, senior Jeremy Lea destroyed his fourth home run of the year over the left field fence in the home half of the sixth before sophomore Thomas Gavello crushed his third long ball of the season as the Tigers remained in striking distance. Shortly thereafter, LeForestier singled home Arakawa for his third run of the game as Pacific only trained by four runs heading into the seventh, 11-7.
  • Although the Dirtbags would add their final run of the contest on two hits in the top of the inning, Pacific exploded for arguably their best inning at the plate this season when they plated 9 runs on seven hits in the bottom of the seventh. In the inning, junior Ben Nemivant struck first with a booming home run over the centerfield fence, followed by back-to-back two-run singles from Gavello and Arakawa to tie the game at 12. Coming up clutch, Middleton knocked in the go-ahead run on an RBI single just two batters later, giving Pacific their first lead of the contest, 13-12. Seeing his first at-bat since Apr. 7 at Fresno State, sophomore Aidan Selfridge pushed the score to 15-12 with a two-run single of his own to continue the merry-go-round inning. Scoring on one final opportunity, freshman Chaz Myers came across on a wild pitch to close the inning as the Tigers stole the momentum from the Dirtbags going into the eighth, leading 16-12.
  • Tacking on one final insurance run, Gavello also scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth as the Tigers remained on top, 17-12, moving into the final inning.
  • Locking down his team-leading fourth save of the season, redshirt fifth year student Nick Swanson slammed the door on the Dirtbags in the ninth as the Tigers recorded their first victory at home since Mar. 17 with a five-run win over LBSU by a final score of 17-12.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leading the charge offensively, Gavello and Middleton both finished with a season-high four RBI individually on Saturday as the duo combined to go 6-for-9 with four runs scored and three walks. Impressively, Middleton has now extended his reached base streak to nine games as well as his hitting streak to seven consecutive contests.
  • Notably, freshman Jacob Weiss tallied the first hit of his collegiate career against LBSU with a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Additionally, LeForestier recorded his tenth multi-hit game of the season after finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and one walk.
  • On the mound, junior Zach Patterson logged his first win as Tiger, as he set up the door for Swanson's save despite just pitching 0.1 innings.

UP NEXT:
Pacific will aim to take the rubber match from Long Beach State on Sunday as first pitch from Klein Family Field is set for 12:00 pm. Senior Henrik Reinertsen is set to toe the rubber for the Tigers while left hander Alfredo Ruiz gets the assignment for the Dirtbags.
