STOCKTON, Calif. – Playing in the comfort of Klein Family Field for the first time since Mar. 21, the Pacific baseball team (8-22, 0-9) could not get back in the win column on Friday night against Long Beach State (9-8, 8-8), falling to the Dirtbags, 3-2, in the series opener.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Pushing across the first run of the ballgame in the first three batters, Long Beach State took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single into right field from first baseman Chase Luttrell. Shortly thereafter, the second run of the inning scored on an error by second baseman James Arakawa, who dropped the baseball in an attempt to turn a double play.
- Responding quickly in the home half of the first, the Tigers cut their two-run deficit in half when senior Charles Middleton doubled home classmate Alex LeForestier, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Dirtbags through the first inning of play.
- With no action in the second, LBSU plated what would be their final run of the contest on an RBI single from catcher Cole Joy in the top of the third, extending their advantage to 3-1.
- As both pitching staffs settled in on the mound in the following innings, the Tigers made it a one-run ballgame once again when LeForestier poked a single into left field in the bottom of the fifth, plating sophomore Thomas Gavello as Pacific trailed just 3-2 through five innings complete.
- Despite dominant performances out of the bullpen from seniors Joe Solomon, Hunter Schilperoort and Landon Curtis in the remainder of the game, UOP could not gather any momentum at the dish as the Tigers notched only one hit in their final four innings of play.
- Logging his sixth save of the year, Devereaux Harrison secured the 3-2 win for the Dirtbags in the ninth as LBSU hung on to take game one of the series.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- With his RBI single in the first inning, Middleton extended his team-high reached base streak to eight games on Friday night.
- Finding his stride in the box, LeForestier recorded at least one hit for the fifth time in the last six games against the Dirtbags. Overall, the Sacramento native currently sits second on the team in batting average with a .316 clip on the year.
- Altogether, Solomon, Schilperoort and Curtis combined for 5.1 innings of scoreless relief as the trior surrendered only two hits while striking out nine total batters.
