Cardinal Top Tigers in First Meeting

Box Score STANFORD, Calif. – Playing in their final contest of a twelve-game road stretch, the Pacific baseball team (8-20, 0-9) faced their toughest task of the season so far in No. 20 Stanford on Wednesday evening, falling to the Cardinal 2-0.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Leading off the ballgame, sophomore Thomas Gavello sharply singled into centerfield, but the Tigers were unable to push him across in the opening frame.
  • Although Gavello would reach again on his second single of the night in the top of the third, Pacific could not plate the third baseman once again as Stanford scored the first run of the evening on an RBI groundout from Drew Bowser in the home half of the inning. Through three complete, Stanford held a 1-0 advantage.
  • Despite recording one hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh, the Tigers could not rally to even the contest in the subsequent innings. Following the seventh inning stretch, Stanford added an insurance run on an RBI single from catcher Vincent Martinez to extend their lead to 2-0.
  • With no action from either team in the eighth, senior Charles Middleton laced a single up the middle as the second batter in the top of the ninth. Unfortunately, Pacific could not find the timely hitting they needed in their final appearances at the plate as Zach Grech picked up his tenth save of the season to secure the 2-0 victory for the Cardinal.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Serving as a steady presence at the top of the lineup, Gavello finished with a team-high 3 hits in 4 at-bats on Wednesday evening.
  • Additionally, Middleton extended his on-base streak to seven games, one short of his season high (8), with his single in the ninth.
  • Out of the bullpen, redshirt fifth year student Nick Swanson logged his third consecutive scoreless appearance against the Cardinal, allowing just one hit in 1.0 inning pitched.
