STOCKTON, Calif. – Hosting their first midweek contest of the season, the Pacific baseball team (7-7) used a strong team pitching performance on Wednesday night to take down Fresno State (5-6), 3-2, at Klein Family Field.
In a game that saw thirteen different pitchers make an appearance between the two squads, seven Tigers combined to stifle the Bulldog offense and notch their second consecutive victory.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Seeming to be a theme so far in 2021, the Tigers opened the scoring on an RBI single from senior Hunter Schilperoort in the bottom of the second, as sophomore Thomas Gavello came around to give Pacific the early 1-0 advantage.
- One inning later, junior Ben Nemivant deposited the baseball over the right centerfield wall, extending the UOP to 2-0 through two innings complete.
- In the top of the fifth, Fresno State responded by cutting their deficit in half on an RBI single from Nate Thimjon.
- With neither team able to find more momentum over the next two innings, the Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the seventh to even the score at two.
- However, the Tigers shortly plated a run of their own to retake the lead in the bottom of the seventh, as freshman Chaz Myers notched the first collegiate hit of his career, a go-ahead RBI double, to score senior Alex LeForestier and put Pacific up 3-2.
- Locking down the Bulldog lineup for the remainder of the game, fifth year right hander Nick Swanson would come on to record his third save of the year and secure the one-run victory for the Tigers, 3-2, over Fresno State.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- It was a historic night at Klein Family Field, Myers' first hit and RBI while Nemivant's long ball in the bottom of the second also marked the first home run of his career as a Tiger. Overall, Michael Defelippi also notched his first win in the Orange & Black.
- At the dish, Schilperoort drove in his first run of the new season on Wednesday night.
- After allowing elevens runs in his first six innings pitched on the year, junior Dylan Pottgieser has found his stride on the mound, as the Pleasanton native has now tallied 7.0 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two appearances.
