Pacific Drops Close Contests in Doubleheader vs. Gaels

STOCKTON, Calif. – Playing their second straight weekend doubleheader, the Pacific baseball team (5-7) was unable to defend their home field against Saint Mary's on Saturday, falling to the Gaels (9-6), 4-3, in game one before dropping game two in the nightcap, 5-4.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Game One-
  • Following a painless first inning from both starting pitchers, Pacific got on the board first in the bottom of the second despite not recording a hit as the Tigers pushed across two runs in the inning, including one on an error by the Gael shortstop, Kyle Velasquez.
  • Shortly, thereafter Saint Mary's tallied their first run of the ballgame on an RBI double by Jacob Talamante, cutting the early Tiger lead to 2-1 in the top of the third.
  • Settling in, senior Henrik Reinertsen did not encounter much trouble on the mound until the top of the sixth, as the right hander got the first two batters out on groundouts before hitting two straight Gaels.
  • Subsequently, Marc Goulart singled home the SMC baserunner to even the score at two before junior Marvcus Guarin came on in relief. Upon taking over, the Seattle U transfer gave up another RBI single to Nick Mistone, as the Gaels jumped in front, 3-2, through six innings complete.
  • Adding late insurance, Bryce Mann drove home Justin Banks in the top of the eighth to extend the Saint Mary's lead to 4-2.
  • Looking for one last rally, seniors Charles Middleton and Alex LeForestier would begin the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles. One batter later, sophomore Thomas Gavello would drive home Middleton to trim the Gael lead to just one. Unfortunately, this is as close as Pacific would come in their final at-bats, as Christopher Campos retired the next two batters to notch his third save of the season and lock up the victory for Saint Mary's, 4-3.

Game Two-
  • Plating the first run of the contest in both games of the doubleheader, Pacific jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first on a sharp line drive single into left field off the bat of junior Zach Patterson.
  • In the following inning, senior James McClenaghan flied out to right field, with Gavello attempting to tag up and score on the play. Getting caught in a run down between third base and home plate following a throw from Ryan Novis, the Tiger third baseman would come across to score after Mistone dropped the ball in an effort to tag Gavello at third, allow him to then scramble down the line and push the Pacific advantage to 2-0.
  • Quickly battling back, the Gaels answered with three hits and two runs in the top of the third to even the score at two heading into the fourth inning.
  • Following two straight scoreless innings from both sides, Saint Mary's took their first lead of the evening with two more runs on two more hits to begin the fifth, jumping on top, 4-2. One inning later, SMC drove home their final run of the night on an RBI single from Talamante to extend their lead to 5-2.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Pacific applied pressure on the Gaels a rally of their own, which included two runs on three hits, one of which was an RBI single by LeForestier.
  • Seeming to match each other down the stretch again, both bullpens would not allow a run through the final three innings, as Saint Mary's escaped a jam in the bottom of the ninth after walking McClenaghan to hang on and secure the doubleheader sweep by a final score of 5-4.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Despite both losses, junior James Arakawa extended his hitting streak to a team-high 12 games after notching one hit in both contests on Saturday.
  • Although they would fall short in game two, nine different Tigers recorded at least one hit in the evening game.
  • Regaining his rhythm on the mound, senior Landon Curtis recorded his second straight scoreless relief appearance for the Tigers, going 3.0 innings in game two without allowing a run while also notching three strikeouts.

UP NEXT:
Pacific will wrap up their four-game series against Saint Mary's with the series finale tomorrow, Sunday, March 14 at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif. Previously scheduled for 1:00 pm, first pitch is now set for 11:00 am PST in an effort to avoid inclement weather in the area during the afternoon.
