STOCKTON, Calif. – Returning home to Klein Family Field for their first contest since Feb. 22, the Pacific baseball team (5-5) was unable to find their stride at the plate, falling to Saint Mary's (7-6), 3-1, in a pitcher's duel on Friday evening.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- After starter Hayden Pearce escaped a jam following two Tiger errors to begin the top of the first, senior Charles Middleton kicked off the scoring by poking a single into left field in the home half of the inning to score classmate James McClenaghan, giving Pacific the early 1-0 through one inning.
- Shortly thereafter, Saint Mary's responded with two runs on two hits in the top of the second, taking their first advantage of the game, 2-1, through two innings complete.
- With both starters settling in, neither team would push across another run until right fielder Ryan Novis drove home Nick Mistone for what would be the game's final run in the top of the fourth, putting the Gaels on top 3-1.
- Although junior Jeremy Lea opened the bottom of the inning with a triple into the left centerfield gap, the Tigers could not find the necessary knock to push across the UOP backstop.
- Taking the mound to begin the fifth, junior Dylan Pottgieser came on in relief for Pearce and would not allow a run through the final five innings of the contest.
- Unfortunately, the bullpen for Saint Mary's would lock down the Tiger lineup as well, as starter Carlos Lomeli only allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings of work before the Gael bullpen shutout Pacific the rest of the way to close out the ballgame and secure the victory in game one of the series by a final score of 3-1.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Continuing to impress with the bat in his hands, junior James Arakawa pushed his hitting streak to a team-high eleven games with a single to left field in the top of the third.
- Enjoying success at the dish as well, Lea notched his third consecutive two-hit contest on Friday night, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, triple and hit by pitch.
- Making his first relief appearance of 2021, Pottgieser's 5.0 scoreless innings marked the longest the right hander has thrown since only allowing one run in five innings at Seattle U on Mar. 1, 2020.
